Introduction to BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers

Everyone has their reasons for cosmetic treatments. Some people would like to enhance a particular aspect of their appearance while others may want to correct a genetic setback. Whatever your reasoning, it shouldn’t matter as long as it’s your choice. While the botulinum toxin can do a lot to preserve or reverse your aging appearance, is also been utilized as a way to treat other physical conditions that can be debilitating like chronic migraines, or embarrassing, like excessive sweating. At Aesthetics MedSpa in Lansing, MI, we frequently use BOTOX for a variety of treatments that help our patients live better lives.

Overview

What are BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers?

BOTOX is an FDA-approved cosmetic injection that, when used in controlled doses, is often used to help relax the muscles that cause pesky fine lines and wrinkles in your face. It delivers impressive results with a non-invasive treatment experience. At Aesthetics Med Spa, not only do we have the ever-popular BOTOX option, but we offer Dysport as another option for softening your appearance. Although you can enjoy the benefits from just one wrinkle relaxer treatment, sometimes after multiple treatments, many of our patients have been able to enjoy some very long-term results and even see the prevention of extra fine lines or wrinkles.

DYSPORT

Dysport is a wrinkle relaxer that is very similar to BOTOX and even comes from the same family of botulinum toxin, albeit with a slightly different formula. It is most often used to treat the lines that form between your eyebrows (often called “worry lines” or glabellar lines ), but can also be used on your eyes (crow’s feet), lips, and neck.

XEOMIN

Sometimes referred to as “naked BOTOX” due to its purity or more “natural and clean” formula, Xeomin is a botulinum toxin type A but has removed the inactive, accessory proteins that are found in BOTOX. Other than this minor, but important difference, Xeomin performs the same function and is often used to treat the “11” lines that form between your brows. The filler will take about three to seven days to achieve its full results, but you should be able to enjoy the effects for three to four months.

Xeomin has been known to be a great option for patients with cervical dystonia (a condition where your neck muscles contract involuntarily), blepharospasm (uncontrollable twitching or blinking of the eyelids), or moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

What to Expect on the Day of BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers

When it’s time for your BOTOX treatment, we will make you comfortable and numb the treatment area using a topical anesthetic ointment. Then, depending on what you’re trying to treat, specific spots will be targeted to make sure you get the best results. The injection is done with a very fine needle and each treatment site will receive a specific amount of toxin to block the nerves.

BOTOX For Hyperhidrosis

Nobody likes being a wet blanket. While this term is typically used to describe someone who ruins the fun, there are some patients who quite literally become “wet blankets” due to their uncontrollable and excessive sweating from a condition called Hyperhidrosis. Thanks to the research done with BOTOX, you can leave your towel behind and start living the life you want to live, without fear of pit stains or drenched, stinky socks. When you are treated for Hyperhidrosis with BOTOX, the botulinum toxin is used to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating and stop your sweat glands from producing too much sweat. It can be used to treat under your arms and even your hands or feet. On average, you can expect to get retreatment within four to six months, however with multiple treatments over time, you will notice longer periods of dryness and less need for the injection.

BOTOX For Migraines

We know what you’re thinking, “I thought this injectable was just to make me look better?” BOTOX is one of the most popular wrinkle-relaxing treatments and the name has almost become synonymous with the treatment, but not only can it rejuvenate your appearance, but it can also help alleviate chronic migraines! Everyone has experienced a headache at least a few times in their lives, and it’s usually dealt with a couple of ibuprofen and tons of water. Unfortunately, there is a good portion of patients out there who get extreme headaches that cause excessive throbbing, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other symptoms that can be almost crippling depending on the severity of the attack. The FDA has classified a migraine as a consistent headache that is felt 15 or more days a month, although the days do not need to be consecutive.

During the treatment, your specialist will inject the “trigger points” that are common areas where the migraine originates, such as your forehead, temples, or the back of your head and neck. These points are filled with “pain fibers” so that when BOTOX interacts with these nerve endings, it blocks the release of chemicals involved in pain transmission and prevents activation of the pain networks in the brain. While this is not a permanent treatment, it can last between 10 and 12 weeks. There have been some patient claims that with two BOTOX treatments, their headaches have even decreased by approximately 50%.
